Tracing your ancestors, admiring the sculpture and art, or just some good value shopping! All in a day at Banbridge

So the President-elect, Obama, has roots in Ireland. His ancestors came from Moneygall, Co. Offaly. Meanwhile it turns out that McCain’s Family Tree ties back to Co. Antrim. Seems like Ireland always likes to claim everyone as its own!

If you’re looking into your ancestry, and want to know a bit more about your family, a great resource is available at the tourist office, in Banbridge, Co. Down, just 30 minutes drive from Lecale Cottages. For the small fee of £15, Banbridge Genealogy Services can trace your ancestors through birth, marriage, and death certificates that range from 1790 right through to 1920. They also hold newspaper and property files, so you can find out more about those indiviuals.

Banbridge Genealogy Services are located at the Tourist Information Centre, which also houses the impressive F.E. McWilliam Gallery & Studio. This is only recently opened and is dedicated to the memory of the town’s artist and sculptor Frederick Edward  McWilliam, one of Ireland’s most influential and successful artists. I would suggest taking advantage of the free talks and tours provided at the gallery, as the guides tell the stories behind the works of art, that really bring them to life.
